Scientists at NOAA and the University of Miami found that the ocean absorbed an unprecedented 15 zetajoules of heat in 2023, equivalent to seven Hiroshima bombs exploding every second. This heat uptake, primarily into the deep ocean below 700 meters, was measured using a global network of Argo floats which collect temperature and salinity data. While the deep ocean temporarily buffers surface warming, it's accumulating a vast amount of energy that will eventually resurface. This research highlights the ocean's critical, yet finite, role in mitigating atmospheric warming.
Why It’s Fascinating
Experts are surprised by the sheer magnitude of heat accumulating in the deep ocean, which highlights the pervasive impact of anthropogenic climate change even in previously stable environments. This challenges the notion that the deep ocean is largely insulated from human activity, confirming its role as the planet's largest heat sink. Within the next decade, this stored heat could lead to more frequent and prolonged marine heatwaves, devastating coral reefs and fisheries, and accelerating sea level rise. Think of the ocean as a giant sponge absorbing excess heat; it's getting saturated, and the squeeze-out effect is inevitable.
