NuScale Power Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are advanced light-water reactors designed to be factory-fabricated, transportable, and deployed as modular units, each capable of generating approximately 77 MWe. These pressurized water reactors incorporate passive safety features, relying on natural circulation for cooling and remaining submerged in a seismic-resistant pool. NuScale Power is the leading developer, with significant support from the U.S. Department of Energy. The technology is in the early commercialization phase, with NuScale's design being the first SMR to receive design certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in August 2020. This modular design contrasts sharply with traditional gigawatt-scale nuclear plants, offering greater flexibility in siting and deployment, as well as reduced construction times and costs.

Why It Matters

Decarbonizing the global power grid and providing reliable baseload electricity for expanding populations in a $2 trillion electricity market is a critical challenge. NuScale SMRs offer a scalable, carbon-free power solution, ideal for replacing aging fossil fuel plants or powering remote communities, industrial parks, and data centers. Utilities and energy-intensive industries stand to gain, while traditional large-scale nuclear plant developers may face increased competition. Regulatory licensing for new reactor designs and securing initial commercial contracts for deployment are significant barriers. NuScale aims for its first module to be operational by 2029 at the Carbon Free Power Project in Idaho, with broader commercial deployment in the 2030s. A less obvious impact is their potential to power large-scale desalination plants in water-stressed regions, offering a sustainable solution to global water scarcity.
