Small Sealed Transportable Autonomous Reactors (SSTAR)
Future Tech

Small Sealed Transportable Autonomous Reactors (SSTARs), often called microreactors, are very small nuclear reactors designed to be factory-fueled, sealed for their operational lifetime, and transportable. They operate autonomously with minimal operator intervention and have a very long core life, typically 10-20 years, without needing refueling. Companies like Oklo Power, Westinghouse (with its eVinci microreactor), and the US Department of Energy are key developers in this burgeoning field. The technology is in the design, licensing, and early prototype stage, with Oklo's Aurora reactor design having completed key phases of its licensing review with the US NRC in 2020. SSTARs represent an even smaller and simpler evolution from SMRs, offering a truly 'plug-and-play' nuclear energy solution for niche applications.

Why It Matters

Reliable, resilient, and carbon-free power is critical for remote communities, military bases, disaster relief, and rapidly growing data centers, a sector projected to consume over 10% of global electricity by 2030. SSTARs could provide always-on power for remote mines, isolated scientific outposts, or be rapidly deployed during emergencies, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels in these contexts. Remote industries, military branches, and data center operators are clear winners, while diesel generator manufacturers for remote sites might see reduced demand. Overcoming regulatory approval for these novel, sealed-core designs and achieving cost-competitiveness at a very small scale are the main hurdles. Initial deployments are expected in the late 2020s to 2030s, primarily in the US, Canada, and the UK. A profound second-order consequence is the democratization of energy access, empowering previously underserved regions with reliable, high-density power.
