A joint Egyptian-American archaeological mission, co-led by Dr. Matthew Adams of New York University, unearthed the world's oldest known large-scale brewery in Abydos, Egypt. Dating back to the reign of King Narmer around 3100 BC, the brewery consisted of eight massive production lines, each containing about 40 large pottery basins arranged in two rows, capable of producing approximately 22,400 liters of beer at a time. The team meticulously excavated and mapped the site, identifying the distinct structures and hundreds of pottery fragments consistent with ancient brewing processes, including large vats and grain residue. The sheer industrial scale of the brewery challenges previous assumptions about the level of organized mass production and resource allocation in early dynastic Egypt. The discovery was announced by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in February 2021.
